According to Darren Witcoop, Coventry City are leading the fight to capture Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo on loan.
On January 22, the journalist revealed that Frank Lampard’s team appear to have beaten Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday to the signing of the Welsh international.
The Championship clubs were interested in taking the 24-year-old on loan, but a deal with the Sky Blues now appears to be nearing conclusion.
Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo is close to joining Coventry City on loan.
The former Schalke attacker has struggled under Philippe Clement, making only six appearances and suffering with injury worries.
Despite this, the Welshman has two goals and two assists in the Scottish Premiership, which has aroused the curiosity of Championship sides.
Matondo has already played in the English second tier, spending the second half of the 2020/21 season with Stoke City.
Although this was not a complete success, it has not diminished interest in bringing him back to England from Govan during the winter window.
It makes sense for everyone involved for the winger to get out there and play some regular football before returning to Ibrox at the end of the season.
A move to join Lampard’s side for the remainder of the season will be intriguing, especially given Coventry’s current Championship position of 13th place.
With the Gers’ forward among their ranks temporarily, a playoff charge is possible.
