The Scottish Sun reports that Rangers are close to signing Lille defender Rafael Fernandes.
On January 17, the news site took to X to suggest that the 22-year-old is on the Ibrox club’s radar during the current transfer window.
Even if he is signed in time for the Manchester United game on January 23, he will not be eligible to play because the European squad list cannot be changed until the current league phase is completed.
Rafael Fernandes would be an excellent addition for Rangers.
Fernandes might add much-needed depth and skill to Gers’ backline, especially given recent injuries.
Fernandes, 22, is a young, potential centre-back with experience in the Portuguese top division, having previously played for Arouca before joining Lille.
Although he has not made a first-team appearance for Lille, his potential and attention from other French clubs suggest he has qualities that could benefit Gers.
His presence could aid to shore up the defense for the second half of the season by providing consistency and competition for positions, potentially improving the defensive unit’s overall performance.
Nils Koppen must be confident that he will boost the playing eleven; otherwise, signing him makes little sense.
If Fernandes is not available, a quality defender should arrive at Ibrox before the transfer window closes in February.
