Radu Dragusin’s agent has stated that he ‘can’t believe’ the Romanian international turned down another club to join Tottenham, adding that it is the ‘correct step’ in his career.
The 21-year-old centre-back is likely to join Spurs from Italian side Genoa as their first permanent signing of the year, following the loan acquisition of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig on Tuesday.
The two clubs allegedly negotiated an agreement worth £25.9 million plus add-ons for the defender, with Spurs right-back Djed Spence moving the other way on loan when his loan at Leeds was ended.
Dragusin was also connected with Bayern Munich, which made an improved bid of £26.7 million to beat Spurs to his signature.
However, the Romania international turned down a move to the Allianz Arena in favour of Tottenham, with the transfer set to be revealed soon.
While his agency expressed surprise at the defender’s decision to pass down Bayern, he clarified the defender’s reasoning: “It was ultimately what Radu and his family wanted.” He’s happy. We’re heading to Tottenham!
“He did not choose the money. There was more in Bayern. He stated that this is the correct step for his career.
“He prioritized his career over money, which is laudable. I am not sure how many people would have refused Bayern’s offer. Many people did not believe we would turn down Bayern.
“There was a significant difference. Almost half as much, if not more, but ignore the accounts. They were never a priority.
“We always choose the steps we believe are correct. I believe he considered the fact that he had always desired to play in the Premier League.
Tottenham fans will undoubtedly be pleased with this initial introduction to a new signing. Dragusin will have to battle with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven for a spot at centre-back when all three are fully fit, but he can also play full-back if necessary.
