Leeds United might sell Wilfried Gnonto for much to £40 million, matching Georginio Rutter’s transfer cost to Brighton, according to Paul Robinson.
Rutter moved to the Premier League club in a big-money deal [BBC Sport], with the Seagulls activating the player’s release clause, while Crysencio Summerville joined West Ham for about £25 million.
Despite widespread rumors about his likely departure, Gnonto stayed at Elland Road, with Leeds signing a new contract for the 20-year-old shortly after the transfer market closed [Official website].
It is understood that no release provision is included in the new contract, which will keep the Italian with the club until 2028 [Graham Smyth].
Robinson told MOT Leeds News: “I’m not sure the release clause was that crucial in Gnonto’s contract. Leeds received the following prices for Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter, and Crysencio Summerville. He’s probably not in that bracket, but slightly below it.
“A release clause would not have been advantageous because if a team wants him and he performs at a certain level, you can see the level that Leeds is willing to sell at, which will not deter teams.
“From the player’s perspective, if he performs at the expected level, his transfer value will not change significantly because Rutter and Summerville have set the standard. “That is what Leeds would accept if they ever sold.”
Wilfried Gnonto’s fee at Leeds United is poised to increase.
With Summerville and Rutter departing this summer, Gnonto, whom Junior Firpo described as “unbelievable” [Leeds Live], has already stepped up significantly for Daniel Farke and the Whites.
Despite being only 20 years old, the Italian continues to drive his team ahead as Leeds seek promotion to the Premier League for the second time around.
As Farke’s biggest offensive threat today, he might command a huge transfer fee, especially if the Whites, led by the youthful winger, win promotion from the Championship.
