Tony Dorigo says he spoke with Leeds United’s technical director Gretar Steinsson about the remainder of the transfer window.
Speaking on the Square Ball Podcast [16 August], the former Whites left-back claims Steinsson held his cards close to his chest and offered no feedback on the club’s current condition of play, preferring to keep things “in-house”.
Fans at Elland Road are becoming increasingly concerned about the club’s transfer activity this summer, with Georginio Rutter set to become the second high-profile ace to leave for the Premier League, following the departures of Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville.
Dorigo stated: “I spoke with Gretar. I asked him if he could tell me anything, and he just answered, ‘I’m not going to tell you anything.
“He stated that they want to keep everything in-house and not move anywhere. So he wasn’t going to tell me anything, and that’s fine.
“We shouldn’t know. But, with the clock ticking, it’s a gamble, but I believe in what [the club] has done before.”
Leeds United in a tough transfer scenario
The next two weeks are critical for Leeds United to succeed; they will define their season.
With a pair of great players leaving Elland Road, as well as many more as the roster is cut – perhaps too much – more recruits must be brought in, both in quality and quantity.
With Rutter’s departure, Daniel Farke’s side now has only 19 recognised first-team players, and other clubs are picking up on Leeds’ near desperate need for new players when they contact them.
It might become a situation in which the club is held hostage and forced to pay exorbitant fees for other clubs’ talent – not an ideal situation in terms of PSR, even with the big sums recovered on Rutter, Gray and Summerville.
When you consider that players like Wilfried Gnonto could leave before the 30 August deadline, it’s a precarious situation for Leeds fans, who were previously confident of automatic promotion.
