Clinton Morrison, a Sky Sports commentator, believes Leeds United will be successful in their drive for automatic promotion from the Championship this season.
The Whites have been in incredible form recently, with Saturday’s shock 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened Huddersfield Town ending their nine-game winning streak. With league leaders Leicester City struggling in recent weeks, Daniel Farke’s side was able to cut the gap at the top of the table, culminating in a remarkable 3-1 comeback victory over the Foxes at the end of last month.
Unfortunately for the Yorkshire side, Ipswich Town has kept up the pace. Kieran McKenna’s squad moved into the final automatic promotion berth in second place with a 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle at the weekend, behind only Leicester by three points.
There are only 11 games remaining before we find out who will play in the Premier League next season. Leeds will look to go back to winning ways on Tuesday night when they entertain struggling Stoke City, while the Tractor Boys welcome Bristol City to Portman Road. Meanwhile, Leicester will face a difficult challenge when they go to the Stadium of Light to face an out-of-form Sunderland.
Despite this, Morrison believes Enzo Maresca will lead the East Midlands side to the title, leaving a three-way tie for the final automatic promotion berth. Speaking to Sky Sports News via Leeds United News, the former Birmingham City striker stated:
“We have a title race, but I believe Leicester will win the crown. I know they’ve had some negative results, but I still believe they’re good enough. There was a gap. Leicester have recently experienced a sticky spell, which is common in the Championship. I believe they will start now.
“I think they’ll win, and Leeds will finish second. I believe it will be those (two). McKenna, from Ipswich, did an excellent job. All they can do is keep winning, but if you look at the Leeds squad, Summerville, Gnonto, Piroe, Rutter, and even Bamford starting today (Saturday) with Piroe on the bench, and then they can bring them on, Archie Gray, they have a fantastic squad, so I believe Leeds will just do it.
“If you asked me a month ago, I would have answered Southampton, but as I already stated, this is what the Championship is like. “It’s really tight.”
