Kalvin Phillips has had a dreadful few weeks since joining West Ham United on loan from Manchester City, particularly following Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
The 28-year-old hasn’t been at his best since leaving Leeds in the summer of 2022. During his 18-month stint at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, he made only 31 appearances.
It resulted in his joining West Ham on loan. He said that if City had not expressed interest, he would have joined West Ham from Leeds. Indeed, he said David Moyes sought to sign him at Elland Road.
However, a mistake a few minutes into his debut against Bournemouth, a mistake in a 3-0 loss to Manchester United, a red card against Nottingham Forest, and then a penalty conceded at Newcastle all contributed to a poor start.
Kalvin Phillips can’t stop making mistakes for West Ham.
Footage from the 4-3 loss to Newcastle, in which Newcastle came from 3-1 down to win 4-3, shows Phillips responding to furious West Ham fans with a middle finger as he boards the coach.
Speaking at TalkSPORT on Monday, Andy Townsend stated that the only way for Phillips to return to his best is to rejoin Leeds. Of course, such a move is only possible if the Whites are promoted.
“I can only see him returning to Leeds as the only option for him to regain inner peace, be at ease in his surroundings, and be loved again. That is the most important thing he needs.
“Not long ago, when he was wearing Leeds’ white, we were discussing what a player this youngster is. He’s great at getting across the field and passing, making him an asset to any squad. Completely gone, practically hollowed out.
What has been said about Phillips’ prospective return to Leeds
Leeds reportedly wants to re-sign Phillips. But, as previously stated, promotion is necessary. Leeds defeated Hull 3-1 on Monday night, returning to the top two.
It is said to see, and it will be a sad sight for Marcelo Bielsa, who brought out the best in him after moving him to holding midfield. He is claimed to have been monitoring all of Phillips’ games since.
Should Leeds sign him? Leeds are particularly thin in central midfield, with Archie Gray playing on the right side of defence and Ethan Ampadu partnering Joe Rodon at centre-back. There is room for a move.
