Pundit admits ‘huge’ Leeds transfer with free agent move in cards

Paul Robinson feels Leeds United have “no chance” of signing Marius Wolf on a free transfer as a Championship team next season.

According to Florian Plettenberg [20 May], the Whites have already inquired about the Borussia Dortmund full-back, who is expected to leave the Bundesliga club at the end of his contract this summer.

According to The Daily Mail, Leeds owes almost £100 million in unpaid transfer fees, therefore a free transfer for Wolf may be an option, but only if they are promoted.

Daniel Farke’s team will face Southampton in the Championship play-off final on Sunday, May 26, at Wembley Stadium.

Robinson told MOT Leeds News: “They’re working on two budgets. He is a Premier League player, and they have no chance of signing him if they play in the Championship.

“I am not aware what the FFP and PSR scenarios look like. We saw the club reveal massive losses last time the books were released, particularly in the unpaid transfer fees department. So, I believe Leeds’ hands will be constrained; they will not make any major acquisitions.

“If they make it to the Premier League, I believe the most crucial player will be Joe Rodon. He’s been outstanding this season. Then they form the squad appropriately. I don’t think they’ll overpay significantly. There’s still a lot of dead wood on loan, accounting for significant portions of the pay expense.

“I don’t see those individuals being reintegrated into the squad, with the exception of Jack Harrison, who is more than capable. But given the way he left, I’m not sure if the door is still open for him.

“There are two sides.” If Leeds make the Championship next season, there will be a massive exodus. If they are in the Premier League, it is critical to retain and strengthen the squad’s core. For me, the current squad is stronger than the one that came down from the Premier League.

Will Leeds United recruit Marius Wolf this summer?

Given Leeds’ lack of depth in the full-back position, it makes perfect sense for the club to pursue an international defender, particularly one on a free transfer this summer.

Of course, until the Whites know their fate for the 2024/25 season, transfers will be tough to forecast, with Premier League promotion hanging in the balance.

With only Junior Firpo available at left-back this season, Wolf would be a very reasonable acquisition, and he should be signed even if promotion is not clinched on Sunday.
