Latest Nottingham Forest news with incomings and outgoings on the cards for Reds in crucial summer transfer window
June 30 was always going to be an important occasion in the summer transfer season, particularly for Nottingham Forest.
Last season, the Reds were fined four points for violating the Profitability and Sustainability Rules. They don’t want a recurrence of 2024/25.
The end of the month marks the deadline for the next PSR evaluation cycle. Forest went into this transfer window knowing they needed to generate finances before that date, with the expectation of raising approximately £20 million in profit to cover their allowable losses.
According to The Telegraph, the Reds’ transfer of Moussa Niakhate and Orel Mangala to Lyon “should be enough” to prevent another PSR breach. Niakhate is thought to have cost the French club £20 million, while Mangala is close to joining on a permanent basis following his loan spell in the second half of last season.
The June 30 deadline effectively established a mini-transfer window for Premier League clubs. With that out of the way, and squads returning in early July, activity may pick up in the next weeks – however it would not be surprising if a huge flurry of business occurs near the end of the period.
Teams have until 11 p.m. on August 30 to complete transactions. In terms of Forest, Mangala and Niakhate’s departures are likely to have an impact on Murillo.
The funds raised have alleviated concerns about having to consider a low-cost agreement for the Brazilian before the PSR deadline. If they so desire, the Reds will undoubtedly be able to play hardball with any potential suitors for the centre-back.
Chelsea and Juventus have previously expressed some interest, although Murillo has a large following. It is not surprising that other teams would test the waters at some stage, but Forest should now be in a better position to consider any offers on their own terms.
Whether the 21-year-old remains or leaves could have an impact on any evaluation of Nuno Espirito Santo’s defensive alternatives. It’s an area that needs to be strengthened whatever, but if Murillo departs, the number of new centre-backs necessary may vary. It is critical to ensure adequate strength in depth throughout the pitch.
The Reds’ goalkeeping department will also see a transfer domino effect when the posts are reshuffled. Carlos Miguel’s planned transfer from Corinthians will pave the way for departures.
Forest could sign another goalkeeper in addition to Miguel, bringing the club’s total to three senior stoppers. Meanwhile, Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos, who have struggled to impress since joining the club a year ago, could go this summer.
