Philippe Clement breaks silence on Ibrox sacking with 116-word statement

Rangers are looking for their fourth manager since Steven Gerrard left to join Aston Villa in 2021, following Philippe Clement’s dismissal.

The Belgian comes with a reputation for delivering home success while also competing against far larger funds on the European scene.

Unfortunately, Clement went from hero to zero in just 12 months, as Rangers went from top of the Scottish Premiership and on track for a treble to trophyless and out of all domestic competitions by Valentine’s Day.

Philippe Clement sends a message to Rangers fans after leaving Ibrox

After keeping quiet for a few weeks, Clement has now spoken out about his leaving, commenting on X:

    Dear Ranger,

It’s taken me a few days to completely understand and accept the conclusion of my tenure at this amazing club.

I leave with a heavy heart, irritated and disappointed that I was unable to constantly elevate the team to the level we all expected. I understand and share your frustrations.

We worked tirelessly, day and night, and while we had problems, I will never forget the many wonderful times we shared. Your steadfast support and the excitement of the fans made those moments truly memorable. In those moments, we felt like a giant family.

Rangers will always have a special place in my heart.

    Thank you!

    Philippe

What exactly went wrong with Philippe Clement?

Clement’s ascent and fall as Rangers manager was impressive.

His appointment appeared to be a stroke of genius after only four months in charge, with progress in the Europa League secured, the league cup trophy returned to Ibrox, and Celtic caught and passed in the Scottish Premiership, despite inheriting a 7-point deficit.

Injuries, a lack of investment, and a stubborn refusal to change approach eventually caught up with him, and the Rangers ran out of steam.

Luck and officiating were not on his side in the Scottish Cup final last season or the league cup this season, but things only got worse this season when the wheels completely fell off.

Problems off the field and in the boardroom did not help, but his dismissal was only a matter of time.

Clement gave it his all, but Rangers is a one-of-a-kind club, and the league’s ongoing issues with tough and aggressive clubs were his undoing.
