Leeds United need a new right-back.
The Whites have already lost two alternatives in that area this month, with Djed Spence and Luke Ayling both leaving. That leaves Leeds extremely thin in that area, but with the January transfer window open, there is an opportunity to bring in reinforcements.
On The Square Ball Podcast, Phil Hay discusses Leeds’ quest for a new right-back, including the club’s interest in Neco Williams.
According to Hay, Leeds genuinely want Williams, but Nottingham Forest have no intention of selling the Welshman since Nuno Espirito Santo is a great supporter of the player.
This month; Williams is not available
Hay revealed what he knew about Williams.
“My impression was that they would be active on full-backs this month, I mentioned Neco Williams on Monday as someone they really do like, but all the indications from Forest are that Nuno who has just come in for Steve Cooper also really likes him, and is not interested in letting him go,” Hay went on to say.
Wait and see.
Nottingham Forest are now stating that Williams is unavailable, but we wouldn’t be surprised if this stance changes near the end of the transfer window.Indeed, once Serge Aurier returns to the squad, Williams might become Forest’s third-choice right-back, and if that happens, he could be available if Leeds make a good offer.
Williams is clearly a talented player, having previously been promoted from the Championship to Fulham in the 2021/22 season.
Leeds must consider other options in case Forest maintains their position that Williams is not for sale, although we wouldn’t be surprised if the former Liverpool player appeared on the market near the end of the month.
