Unlike his former Manchester United teammate Gary Neville, Paul Scholes believes Liverpool will be a major contender in this season’s Premier League title fight.
Paul Scholes believes Liverpool will compete for the Premier League title this season, saying he sees only one weakness in the Reds’ roster.
Arne Slot’s squad has had a promising start to the season, winning four of their five league games, with their only defeat coming against Nottingham Forest. After defeating Bournemouth 3-0 on Saturday, they are now trapped between Manchester City and Arsenal in the table, with both teams drawing at the Etihad a day later.
Liverpool is yet to meet either of the two teams expected to be the key title contenders this season, but they will go to Arsenal at the end of next month. For now, their focus is on defending their Carabao Cup title against West Ham this evening.
Many commentators, including Gary Neville, have already written off the Reds’ title prospects. His old Manchester United teammate, however, feels Liverpool will play a role in determining the Premier League trophy’s destination this season.
Scholes remarked on The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, that he believes Liverpool will have an impact on the title fight this year.
“When I look at their front players, I believe they have five or six good ones. Having seen Liverpool firsthand, I perceive very few faults in their squad of players. The only thing we considered was if Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate were injured in the center-half position.
“I see their group, the five or six midfielders who can all run and are high-quality athletes. The forwards may all play. The Forest game, however, threw me off.
Following tonight’s Carabao Cup encounter, Liverpool will travel to Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday. With City facing a difficult journey to Newcastle with Rodri sidelined for the rest of the season, the Reds may have an opportunity to ascend to the top of the table.
Before the October international break, Slot’s team will face Crystal Palace, City will play Fulham, and Arsenal will host Southampton.
Liverpool.com says: Liverpool will almost surely play a role in the title fight this season, with the Reds being one of the few teams capable of posing a genuine danger to City or Arsenal. The question is whether Slot’s team will have enough to compete for the Premier League title – early signals are promising, but there is still a long way to go.
