Following Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, Sky Sports analyst Paul Merson criticized one of the club’s players.
The Reds gave it their best in today’s Super Sunday game, but they were unable to open up the title race.
Arsenal’s triumph over Tottenham had put a lot of pressure on City, but they eventually dispatched Forest rather comfortably.
However, things may have gone differently for the Reds.
Forest pushed City hard and had many excellent scoring opportunities to keep the game interesting.
Unfortunately, Forest squandered numerous opportunities, and the Reds remain in a hard battle to avoid relegation.
Merson wasn’t pleased with one Forest performer, and he expressed his thoughts at the end of the City Ground tournament.
Paul Merson blasts Nottingham Forest striker Christopher Wood.
This was not the afternoon Forest had hoped for, and on another day, they might have won the game by more points.
Wood was immensely guilty of passing up several excellent opportunities, and he will not remember this performance fondly.
His effort in the first half was certainly his greatest chance, but the player who has been in excellent form this season fumbled his lines.
Merson was unimpressed and targeted Forest striker Wood during his post-game analysis.
He stated live on Sky Sports: “Yeah, you have to take your chances.
“When you play against Manchester City, you don’t have many opportunities. And when you do, you have to accept them and hope you can defend adequately.
“They squandered two great opportunities. Wood missed them both.
“In my opinion, two excellent chances. You cannot pass up those opportunities. I don’t care if you represent Arsenal, Liverpool, or Manchester United. When you play against Manchester City, you must score goals.”
Wood will come back and fire for the Reds.
With 13 goals in all competitions this season, it’s safe to say Wood has some credit in the bank.
The 32-year-old has certainly been the surprise package this season, but he did not shine brightly Saturday afternoon.
Wood was distraught with himself after squandering two golden opportunities, and he will be eager to move on from this.
Forest still have games against Sheffield United and Burnley, and Wood will be hoping to get on the scoresheet once again as the season comes to an end.
Wood has received some criticism from Merson, and he will now want to prove his doubters wrong and help Forest stay in the Premier League.
