Max Wöber is set to return to Leeds United’s squad this preseason, as Borussia Monchengladbach is currently unable to reach the asking price for a permanent move.
The beginning of June has seen one significant transfer line dominate the discourse among Leeds fans, with Brenden Aaronson returning to the club after a year on loan in questionable circumstances.
However, he is not the only player who may be forced to swallow his pride and rejoin Daniel Farke’s squad for 24/25.
Max Wöber’s asking price is not fulfilled by Borussia Monchengladbach.
Max Wöber, like Aaronson, spent the 23/24 Bundesliga season with Borussia Monchengladbach, Farke’s former club.
Gladbach’s season has been a disappointment since Farke’s departure in 2023, but they have been impressed with Wöber and would like to sign him permanently.
The difficulty is that, according to German newspaper Kicker (13/6), the asking price rising to £10.1 million is too much for them to pay.
“In the previous Bundesliga season, Maximilian Wöber (26) started 24 games for Borussia Mönchengladbach. As a result, the Foals could consider signing the loanee from Leeds United permanently. But this is currently out of the question because Leeds want ten to twelve million euros for the defender.
Max Wöber was supposed to return to Thorp Arch.
This makes it less likely that Wöber will secure his permanent exit from Gladbach, which his team is pursuing.
Should that be the case, Wöber will return to Thorp Arch for pre-season when his Euro 2024 campaign with Austria concludes.
Austria faces a difficult struggle to advance from Group D, where it will compete against the Netherlands, France, and Poland.
Wöber joined Leeds for £10 million from Red Bull Salzburg in the January 2023 transfer window, under Jesse Marsch, and signed a contract until 2027.
Wöber would provide strong depth for Leeds.
The truth is that the loan players may return regardless of whether our fans are open to the concept.
Everyone thought Wöber would be an excellent player for us in the Championship until he left midway through preseason to join Gladbach.
That has strained his relationship with us substantially, but as a footballer, he will return to us as one of the finest centre-backs in the EFL.
He’d have to get used to playing second fiddle to Pascal Struijk, but that’s some center-back depth that no other team has.
