Daniel Farke will be hopeful that the international break does not disrupt Leeds United’s progress, as the club has won only one league game since the turn of the year.
The Whites return to action on Friday night. And, for the first time this season, we begin a round of fixtures on top of the standings. However, there is still a long way to go.
There will most certainly be many twists and turns before the Championship’s automatic promotion spots are decided. With that, there will be a number of shocks.
Not only will we see some unusual outcomes, but we may also see some surprises in who becomes a hero.
Pascal Struijk’s performances at the end of the 2019/20 season may have been unexpected. In that awful win over Barnsley, the defender came on in difficult circumstances and played superbly as a holding midfielder.
Leeds youngster may have a significant role to play before the season finishes.
And his performance in those final games likely laid the stage for Struijk to establish himself as a first-team player at the start of the following season. Struijk made his first league start as a centre-back for Leeds against Liverpool.
It’ll be interesting to see who emerges this time around. Mateo Joseph, however, is likely the most obvious contender, given the squad’s current state of stability.
Joseph has gotten a taste of first-team football in recent weeks. Of course, Joseph did admirably by scoring twice against Chelsea in the FA Cup.
He has carried that form into international action, scoring for Spain’s under-21s during this break.
Opportunity to write his name in club folklore.
Leeds have a lot of depth in attack right present. Patrick Bamford has been excellent in recent months. Meanwhile, Joel Piroe has scored some vital goals.
But Joseph has the same faith as Daniel Farke. As a result, it is not surprising that he will be presented with numerous possibilities in the coming weeks.
The margins are so close that a single goal at the proper time may cement the 20-year-old’s place in Leeds folklore.
