It’s been 17 days since Juventus signed Lloyd Kelly from Newcastle United.
It was a loan with an obligation to purchase if certain criteria were met.
Those criteria were widely seen as all but a formality.
According to Juventus’ official release (see below), this transaction qualifies as a definitive effective acquisition for accounting reasons due to the strong chance of achieving the player’s acquisition conditions.
Juventus also provided the precise amounts of money that Newcastle United will receive:
A loan fee of €3 million (about £2.5 million) for the season 2024/2025.
If the obligation to buy was triggered, a guaranteed additional €14.5 million (approximately £12.0 million).
If specific criteria were accomplished, further add-ons might total up to €6.5 million (about £5.4 million).
In Italy, the parameters required to trigger the permanent Lloyd Kelly relocation have now been made public.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, Juventus must purchase Lloyd Kelly if they want to compete in any UEFA competition in the 2025/26 season.
That includes the Europa Conference League, thus Juventus’ finish in the top six of Serie A would trigger that duty.
This is how the Serie A table currently appears (Thursday, February 20, 2025):
As you can see, Juventus is presently fourth and five points ahead of seventh, albeit the two clubs in seventh and eighth each have one game in hand on Juve.
Winning the Coppa Italia also grants European qualification, including a spot in the Europa League. Juventus are in the last eight, and their quarter-final is on Wednesday, February 26 at home against Empoli, who are now fourth from bottom in Serie A.
Juventus officially confirms information on the Lloyd Kelly acquisition – February 3, 2025:
Agreement with Newcastle for the acquisition of the footballer Kelly.
Turin, February 3, 2025
Juventus Football Club S. p. A. announces that an agreement has been reached with Newcastle United Football Club for the temporary acquisition of the player Kelly Lloyd Casius’ registration rights until 30 June 2025 for a consideration of €3 million (approx £2.5 million) for the sporting season 2024/2025, with additional costs of up to €0.8 million (approx £0.66 million).
Juventus has agreed to acquire the player’s registration rights for €14.5 million (approximately £12.0 million) over three years, with additional costs of up to €2.7 million (approximately £2.24 million). This amount can be increased to €6.5 million (approximately £5.4 million) if certain sporting objectives are met during the 2024/2025 season.
Given the substantial likelihood of the player’s acquisition criteria being met, this transaction qualifies for accounting purposes as a definitive effective acquisition as of today for a total of €17.5 million (about £14.5 million), plus additional expenditures. It should be mentioned that the final evaluations on the accounting recognition of the transaction will be undertaken for the compilation of the Annual Financial Report on June 25, 2025.’
