According to sources, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United explored a prospective transfer for Yankuba Minteh before he opted to join Brighton.
The Gambia international joined the south coast club for £33 million on Sunday, signing a five-year contract that runs until 2029.
Forest were also interested in signing the 19-year-old forward and discussed a potential deal.
It is one of several accords considered by the two teams as they looked to alleviate their concerns about falling foul of financial limitations.
Despite this, Nottingham and Newcastle had some successful negotiations this summer, as Elliot Anderson moved from St James’ Park to the City Ground for £35 million.
Meanwhile, Odysseas Vlachodimos headed in the opposite direction, joining the Nottingham Magpies.
Nottingham Forest could have profited by signing Minteh.
Newcastle may have loaned Minteh out last season, but the teenager shone during his time with Dutch giants Feyenoord.
During his 27 Eredivisie games, the winger scored 10 goals and assisted six times, demonstrating his innate potential at such a young age.
Only three clubs scored fewer goals than Nottingham in the Premier League previous season, two of which were relegated, therefore Minteh’s attacking abilities would have been beneficial for the upcoming season.
While Nottingham has focused on boosting their team this summer, some may be leaving, as the club has listed four senior players for sale.
Two players could be sold today as Nottingham strives to avoid any points deductions due to the profit and sustainability restriction, which they are presently projected to meet.
