Everton’s previous chief Keith Wyness has insisted Nottingham Forest would attempt to sign a long-term replacement for Chris Wood this month.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Forest could renew the 33-year-old’s deal as well as move for a new striker before the 3 February deadline.
Wood’s current contract at the City Ground is set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season, and Forest are looking to prolong his stay.
He has 14 goals and two assists in 23 games this season as Nuno Espirito Santo’s club sits third in the Premier League rankings.
Forest have reportedly launched an offer for Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, as well as a move for Wolves talisman Matheus Cunha.
Nottingham Forest is looking for long-term wood replacement, according to Wyness.
Wyness demanded that the Midlands giants “bolster the bench, at the very least” if they are to make their Champions League aspirations come true.
He told Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast that Chris Wood, although having a tremendous season, is growing older.
“They have to think about the long term, even if they re-sign him.
“This could just be an unusually excellent season for Wood, so they need to look at a prospective replacement.
“They need to at least strengthen the bench. It’s clear that they want to strengthen this sector.
“Wood has outperformed, he’s asking for a new deal, and you have to consider what he’ll give you over the next three years.
“You’d expect there to be a reduced contract offer going forward.”
