Nottingham Forest transfer risked collapse ‘minutes before deadline’ amid Evangelos Marinakis claim

Nottingham Forest visit Newcastle on Sunday giving Elliot Anderson the chance to return to St James Park

Elliot Anderson’s PSR driven transfer from Newcastle United to Nottingham Forest required Evangelos Marinakis to hold ownership level talks amid fears it could fall through ‘minutes before the deadline’.

That’s according to The Athletic who say there was a ‘concrete possibility’ the deal could collapse as the clock ticked down on the June 30 cut-off point for Anderson’s fee to be included in that year’s PSR calculations.

The report says Newcastle co-owner Jamie Reuben and Marinakis staged discussions which included Toon CEO Darren Eales and Anderson’s agent, David Manasseh, with Newcastle wanting Anthony Elanga to come to St James Park. In the end they had to settle for goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.

As the deadline closed in Newcastle only had Forest’s offer on the table which they were forced to accept.

Newcastle’s loss is very much Forest’s gain with the midfielder set to return to his hometown club for the first time on Sunday. At present, he is competing with Nikolas Milenkovic for the accolade of Forest’s signing of the season.

Reds boss Nuno Espirito Santo admits financial regulation played a part last summer. “It has had a massive effect on transfers, not only for January but also for June. PSR is present in the lives of football clubs these days and they have to keep looking at it.

“It has now changed everything for everybody. Nobody wants to risk a situation like we had last season (the points deduction), so that’s why you sometimes see things that don’t make much sense.”
