Rangers’ start to the transfer window could not have been slower, with Philippe Clement yet to see activity in either direction.
The roster still has players who the manager will wish to move on, but this should not rule out the prospect of loan acquisitions if necessary.
By this time last year, Fabio Silva had already signed, and a forward interested in joining Rangers had missed out.
Rangers connected. Emmanuel Dennis made available for transfer.
Emmanuel Dennis joined on loan for Watford instead, but the versatile striker man has now been judged surplus to requirements by high-flying Nottingham Forest, according to Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth.
“Interest in Nottingham Forest striker Emmanuel Dennis is growing,” the reporter wrote on X.
“Three Championship clubs, one from La Liga and one from Serie A, all want to sign the player.
“Forest will listen to loan and permanent offers. Dennis has entered the final 18 months of his contract.”
Dennis, a Nigeria international, has yet to play this season and has never quite reached the heights of his 2021/22 Premier League season at Watford, when he scored ten goals and assisted six others.
Rangers ran out of goals in the title race last season and would most likely reconsider if they could go back in time:
“Emmanuel Dennis has been proposed to the club, but there has been no official approach as of yet,” Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri told X.
“I can confirm the player’s interest for Rangers though.”
Could Rabbi Matondo’s exit open up a spot for a new winger?
Clement’s biggest issue right now isn’t final-third player injuries like last season, but rather the quality available outside of his first-choice regulars.
Oscar Cortes continues to accumulate minutes, and Nedim Bajrami has demonstrated enough to suggest that he can be a vital player in the long run; nonetheless, the drop off in quality outside of them is too great to mount a sustained challenge or establish consistency.
One important transfer could be Rabbi Matondo’s departure, with Serie A reportedly interested in the flying machine Wales international.
There is nothing definite yet, but removing one of the high-earners from the wage bill would allow Clement to bring in someone who is accessible more often than not and could make a difference.
After being firmly linked last January, Dennis’ name might still be on a list someplace in Nils Koppen’s office.
