Goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey has signed a short-term contract with Nottingham Forest.
The 37-year-old has continued to practice with the Reds since his previous contract terminated last summer. He has now signed a contract until the end of the season, giving Nuno Espirito Santo three senior goalkeepers on his roster.
Hennessey joined the City Ground on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, making nine appearances between the posts over two seasons. Despite not being under contract in recent months, club officials have placed a great importance on his experience and influence among his colleagues.
“At the end of last season, Wayne suffered a serious Achilles injury.” It was a difficult time for everyone,” Nuno remarked ahead of Tuesday night’s Premier League match at home against Liverpool (8pm kick-off).
“He signed a contract, he is with us, and it is a pleasure to have him here. He has experience, and the way he approaches things makes him a great person to be around. I feel quite happy.”
Matz Sels wears the No.1 shirt for the Reds, but deputy Carlos Miguel has barely missed a beat in his two appearances, including Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup triumph against Luton. Aaron Bott, a young player, has been practicing with the group but is now expected to miss some time due to a knee injury.
Forest attempted to sign another goalie near the conclusion of the summer window, with Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher on their desired list. They presently have a position open in their 25-man Premier League squad, but whether Hennessey fills it once the amended list is filed after the winter window closes is dependant on the club’s recruitment activity.
“He helps Matz Sels, Miguel, Aaron (Bott) with their work,” according to Nuno. “Unfortunately, Aaron will be gone for two to three months due to a knee injury.
“I refer to the small group of goalkeepers as the ‘society’. Wayne is an important element of that community.
“We need to finish the transfer window. We might need him. We’ll see if there’s room in the 25 for him.”
