Burns just suffered a hamstring issue.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Wes Burns’ injury is a huge concern for Ipswich Town, given he has contributed five goals and three assists this season.
- Ipswich Town has remained undefeated in Burns’ absence, with a strong attacking lineup.
- Despite losing Burns, Ipswich is well-equipped to compete in the promotion race with Leeds, Leicester, and Southampton.
However, Ipswich Town cannot rest after been dealt a huge blow in recent days.
Wes Burns suffered an injury blow.
Wes Burns suffered a hamstring injury during the club’s 6-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, and as a result, he has been ruled out of the Wales team this month.
It’s unclear how long Burns will be out, but Kieran McKenna’s comments indicated that it was serious.
“It doesn’t look great,” McKenna told the East Anglian Daily Times.
“It’s a hamstring, and it doesn’t appear like a small injury. I don’t think it’s a trivial issue.
“Of course, we’ll scan it over the following several days and evaluate it, but that’s today’s undeniable low point.
“Everyone in the dressing room feels bad for Wes. We just hope the severity isn’t as awful as it may be.”
Ipswich Town can deal with Burns’ blow.
With Burns’ injury, the question of how Ipswich Town will cope without him arises.
The 29-year-old has made 32 appearances in the Championship this season, and his absence will undoubtedly leave a void that must be replaced.
Some of our FLW authors have weighed in on the subject, which is discussed below.
Simmey Hannifin–Donaldson
This will be a major problem for Ipswich Town.
If McKenna is true and the hamstring injury is serious, Wes Burns might miss a significant portion of the season.
Given the number of games he has played for the team this season and his eight goal contributions, he is certainly going to be missed.
However, Ipswich Town can take heart in the fact that they are undefeated in the six games Burns has missed this season.
The Tractor Boys have won three and drew three of those matches, indicating that they have the team to handle the situation.
Omari Hutchinson, for example, is more than capable of filling in wide right for Burns, even if it necessitates some tactical adjustments in the middle.
Ipswich are third in all competitions for replacement goal involvements this season, highlighting their depth in offensive areas, and while Burns’ injury is a blow, it is not enough to derail their promotion aspirations, or even come close.
Alfie Burns
There’s no point in claiming that losing Wes Burns for any period of the season won’t be a setback for Ipswich. This season, he has been superb on the right side, scoring vital goals and contributing assists. In an ideal world, Kieran McKenna would have him at every game.
However, we now know that Ipswich is not a one-man team. Burns is an important part of their operation, but if he is absent, someone else will step in.
With momentum behind them, a group where every player understands their position, and the finish line in sight, it’s difficult to argue that Burns’ potential absence will derail Ipswich.
If you look across the promotion race, Leeds are worried about Georginio Rutter’s fitness for the run-in after hernia surgery; the club believes he will be fine, but there is still concern. Given how much ahead of everyone else at Elland Road in terms of assists and opportunity generation, they face a significantly more difficult situation if he misses any of the final eight games than Ipswich do with Burns.
Of course, it isn’t ideal, but Ipswich should weather the storm and continue to thrive alongside Leeds, Leicester, and, of course, Southampton.
