According to the Daily Record, Nils Koppen has cut the Rangers salary cost by around £50,000 per week following the departures of Kieran Dowell and Rabbi Matondo.
According to the newspaper’s print version (1 February, page 54), Dowell and Matondo’s loan moves to Birmingham City and Hannover 96, respectively, have resulted in thousands of pounds saved for the Gers.
Koppen and the Ibrox administration are also considering selling Tom Lawrence before the winter window ends on February 3, freeing up additional playing time for Findlay Curtis, Bailey Rice, and Paul Nsio.
Lawrence has sparked transfer interest from a variety of sources over the last two transfer windows, and allowing the 31-year-old to leave would free up additional salary flexibility.
Rangers’ Nils Koppen is correcting past transfer mistakes.
The fact that the departures of and Dowell have reduced the weekly salary expenditure at Ibrox by a whopping £50,000 demonstrates how poor the Gers’ contract awarding has previously been.
Dowell and Matondo’s respective contributions at Ibrox have been limited at best, and have been null this season, making it perplexing that the duo were paid an average of £25,000 per week each.
Sending the pair out on loan doesn’t completely solve the problem of their large salaries, but it does free up resources for the Bears to bring in prospective new players before the deadline.
Lawrence, a vital performer for Philippe Clement’s team earlier this season, has sparked a lot of transfer interest, and he, too, is a big earner who would be much better off the books.
Clement’s side is still looking for reinforcements as the winter window draws to a close, and with their pay bill freed up for the first time in a long time, the Light Blues could go all out.
