Ally McCoist has reacted to Ethan Ampadu’s injury at Elland Road, describing it as a “nightmare” for Leeds United.
Daniel Farke announced in a news conference on Monday (30 September) that the Wales international would be out for up to 10 weeks after sustaining a knee injury in the win over Coventry City [Yorkshire Evening Post].
While there is belief at Elland Road that the Whites have the quality to cover for their captain’s absence, talkSPORT anchor McCoist believes it will be a huge setback for Leeds in the coming weeks.
On talkSPORT on Tuesday (1 October, 7:49), he stated: “Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu will be out until at least January after suffering a knee ligament injury in the Championship win over Coventry.”
“Nightmare, we’re seeing so many injuries now and the knee ligaments are the ones, ankle ligaments are the worst as you know.”
What happened to Ethan Ampadu at Leeds United and Elland Road?
It is hardly an overstatement to say that Ampadu’s injury is a nightmare for Leeds United, as McCoist has intimated.
While one player does not make or break a squad, Ampadu is one of the most crucial players on Farke’s team at Elland Road, having been an integral part of what makes Leeds tick over the last year or so.
The Wales international has performed admirably for the Whites both in the middle of the park and as a defender when needed. Without that depth and adaptability, Leeds appear to be low on choices as they seek promotion back to the Premier League.
Hopefully, there will be adequate cover in the German ranks to deal with the captain’s absence. Leeds did not spend a lot of money during the summer transfer window, but they did recruit wisely and strategically to add much-needed depth.
The question will be if the players recruited this summer can reach the standards set by Ampadu in the past.
