Mohamed DIomande was sent off, and McCoist is furious about the decision made by the referee at Tannadice on Sunday.
Astonished Ally McCoist reckons under-fire whistler Nick Walsh was responsible for one of the worst decisions he’s ever seen when he sent Mohamed Diomande off.
The Ivorian was given his marching orders in the dying seconds for raising his hands at Kevin Holt. Rangers players and management were incensed and Walsh was advised to take a second look by VAR official Don Robertson. But the referee stuck to his guns and upheld his initial call to send Diomande off.
In an interview with talkSPORT, the 61-year-old said, “It is probably one of the worst decisions I have ever seen in my life – the boy Diomande, it’s a shocking decision. The referee went over to VAR and got it unbelievably wrong twice.” McCoist believes Philippe Clement will appeal the decision, which he believes is the right course of action after being stunned by the incident.
McCoist wouldn’t let it go and doubled down, airing a list of grievances directly related to Walsh’s decision-making and failure to heed VAR’s call for a second look. He said, “Jeff, you haven’t watched the Rangers’ send-off, have you? Oh my gosh, that is the worst decision; it’s incomprehensible that the referee thinks it’s a red. Here is one for you, I honestly think it is worse than the Arsenal one. Arsenal’s performance was disastrous.
“It baffles me, you are there watching it as a football fan, and you’re wondering ‘what is going through the referee’s mind there?’ When VAR has basically stated ‘you’ve made a small mistake here, effectively’. You know what they are saying: “Come over and take a look at this.” He goes over and doubles down on it, and I think it’s unforgivable. I really do.”
