Newcastle United fans are reacting to their team’s 4-0 defeat over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League.
Readers of Chronicle Live have shared their comments on Newcastle United’s recent 4-0 loss to Manchester City at Etihad Stadium. The Magpies squandered a wonderful opportunity to move up to fourth place after losing badly to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
Omar Marmoush scored a hat-trick in the first half, while Manchester City replacement James McAtee added the finishing touch with a late strike from a corner kick. Newcastle has never won a Premier League game at the Etihad Stadium.
In fact, you’d have to go back to 2006 – well before Manchester City’s takeover – to locate the last time the Magpies earned a point at the champions’ home ground. Furthermore, Newcastle hasn’t scored a goal at the stadium in almost six years.
Chronicle Live readers have been sharing their reactions to the defeat in our comments area, with many thinking that it feels like a big squandered opportunity. They have also pointed to a lack of recent transfer activity as a major reason for the defeat.
Ironman9 commented, “We’re nowhere near where we need to be today. It happens. There have been no new signings in three windows, and the squad is dwindling. Regroup and move on to the next game; it’s that simple. EH has my support and should have that of the entire fan base. People continue to criticize him despite the fact that he has done wonders throughout his stay, leading us to two cup finals and a Champions League campaign. that’s hard to believe that actually works.”
Arko keeps going: “They done exactly what other teams have done to beat us, they went for every ball and never let us settle and they attacked, Eddie needs to start doing his homework again not to study how the other teams play but to see how we get beat, we also need some new blood into the team.”
Paranoidandroid writes: “Man City realised they needed to strengthen their team in the January window and spent £120 million (despite the mounting charges from the ongoing FFP investigation!)” We have not made a meaningful first-team signing in the last two transfer windows. However, we have sold useful players. It’s not the only reason we lost tonight, but while other clubs spend money and improve, we’re selling players and falling behind. What a sorry state to be in for the so-called ‘richest club in the world’ – exhausted and unable to spend our own money!”
Ropppa believes: “We have to trust the manager to turn this around again. He’s been in situations earlier this season where we’ve had very poor performances and each time he’s managed to get the team turned around. In some ways our success this season has been achieved through motivation and drive and it has masked the fact that we simply lack the kind of deep quality that teams like Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal possess. We’re still a work in progress and are still some way off being an elite club. We’ve punched way above our weight for a season or two – to Howe’s immense credit- but thus is a big challenge trying to compete on three fronts. If only we could have spent £180,000,000 in January.”
MealyWC3441 says: “Our manager’s usual response to a loss like this – and we’ve had a few this season – is, ‘we weren’t ourselves today.'” I’m not criticizing EH because I’m a’supporter’, but ‘ourselves’ is rapidly becoming ourselves, if you get what I mean.”
ipagardner believes: “The end result is that we are inconsistent and have a lot of average players. There will be no Europe this season. Schar’s age is beginning to show, and Willock, at best a sub for Trippier, is also showing his age. Murphy enjoys a couple of solid games before regressing for several. Longstaff average at best. We will lose the final to Liverpool if we play like this.”
30YearItch thinks: “One of my issues with Eddie Howe is his fixation on fielding old, slow defenders. He did it in Bournemouth and is doing it again. We’re getting rumbled a lot these days because of Eddie Howe’s insistence on playing (and keeping) one-paced, slowish defenders.”
But Axepete defended the team’s overall quality, stating: “Oh how quickly things change. Bruno was a World Class player wanted by City – Isak is the best striker in the Premiership who we wouldn’t sell for 150 million. Trippier showed he may have lost a wee bit of pace but he is still a World Class Right Back. Supply from our wingers, Gordon and Murphy are as good as any team in the league ….. one bad performance and we are total rubbish again ??? Behave yourselves. YES we were very poor today BUT City looked back to something like their best. Marmoush was on fire, Savinho was virtually unplayable and they didn’t even suffer from another almost non existent display from Haaland.
“When they play with confidence City can do that to anyone. I would put money on it they still finish in the top 3 and are the favourites to win the Premier League next season. We have been inconsistent lately but we have suffered with too many injuries and our squad is not big enough to cope with the work load. I am still hugely proud of our team and I am confident this was a performance we will put behind us and pick up lots more points before the season finishes. PSR is killing us. The sooner we can add more quality to bolster the depth of our squad the better. We are all guilty of forgetting how far we have come in such a short time and we need to get behind our lads. We have plenty of time on our hands and we have 41 points from 25 games …. we would have been ecstatic a few years ago!”
