After Sheffield United were shockingly defeated by Hull City on Friday, Neil Warnock joked that Leeds United and Burnley would be pleased to play to a draw.
Not only do the Whites have a game in hand on their title rivals, but they remain one point clear of the Blades in the table.
Speaking live on Sky Sports in quotes relayed by Lee Sobot via X (24 January), Warnock acknowledged it Leeds and Burnley, who play each other on Monday, will be happy with the Blades’ 3-0 defeat in his own inimitable style.
“They’ll be happy won’t they Burnley and Leeds, they’ll probably agree to have a draw on Monday without playing,” he went on.
The ball is now in the court of Leeds United, following what happened to Sheffield United.
Since the 2024/25 season began, Leeds and the Blades have been vying for first place.
The fact that Chris Wilder’s men received a two-point deduction has likely helped matters with just a one-point gap between the two teams at the moment.
Although the Whites have one of the strongest teams in the second tier, there’s likely always been a thought lingering in the back of fans’ heads that they could drop out of the top two spots, especially after what happened last season.
However, now that Hull have done Daniel Farke and his team a favour, they must take use of the opportunity and defeat Burnley on Monday.
This would put them four points clear of their Yorkshire rivals, as well as six points ahead of Scott Parker’s men, which is a significant advantage.
Only time will tell what the future holds, but right now, the ball is in Leeds’ court.
