Graeme Souness has delivered his judgment on former Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who is currently on loan at West Ham United from Manchester City.
The Liverpool great and talkSPORT pundit believes Phillips is not talented enough to play in the Premier League.
So, what did Graeme Souness say about Kalvin Phillips, a former Leeds United star? Let’s have a look.
Graeme Souness is not thrilled with former Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips.
Well, Liverpool veteran Graeme Souness does not believe Kalvin Phillips has shown himself in the Premier League.
According to the talkSPORT analyst, Manchester City released the former Leeds United midfielder after discovering their error in buying him for £42 million in the summer of 2022.
Phillips struggled to make an impression at City and moved to Premier League rivals West Ham United on loan in the January transfer window. The midfielder was sent off against Nottingham Forest this weekend.
Souness said of Phillips on talkSPORT: “Is he a Premier League player? Why are you [Alan Pardew] saying that?
Former West Ham United boss Alan Pardew responded, “He’s been terrific for England.”
Souness asked, “Do you know how many games he starts for England?” England frequently plays Micky Mouse games. Not to disrespect England, but Scotland does as well. But the teams who play today, for example, Yugoslavia has been disintegrated, and you’re now playing roughly eight nations from that region. They are joke games!
“Al [Alan] isn’t a particularly good player, but this is the wrong move for West Ham. I believe he has played 65 Premier League games, and I am just getting a cheque for that.
“He was at Leeds, came up, played one season in the Premier League. There are currently 69 Premier League games. Gets a major move to Manchester City, according to someone; they immediately find he’s not what they expected and move him on. For me, he still has to establish that he is a quality Premier League player.”
