Isaac Schmidt has struggled to make an impact in Daniel Farke’s team since joining Leeds United last summer.
The left-back has made only nine appearances since joining from Swiss club St Gallen for £4.6 million in August, failing to impress the management after six months.
After watching innumerable movies and listening to Swiss media, fans were ecstatic about Schmidt’s arrival to Elland Road, but it has been far from ideal.
That may probably be attributed to the players ahead of him in the pecking order, Junior Firpo and Sam Bryam, both of whom have been trusted to back up each other at various moments this season.
However, following the latest contract update, the 25-year-old may already be dancing for joy, having signed a four-year contract with the Championship leaders.
Isaac Schmidt will gain from Leeds United contract news
According to Adam Pope, the Whites have yet to initiate contract extension talks with Firpo, Byram, or Josuha Guilavogui, all of whom will be out of a deal after the 2024/25 season.
Fans will, of course, be outraged if all three players are permitted to depart the club before the start of the next season, but Schmidt will undoubtedly be overjoyed.
He was an excellent attacking figure for St Gallen before moving to England, but Farke has put more trust in the other two left-backs, therefore he hasn’t been given an opportunity.
That may change if Leeds does not offer new contracts soon.
Daniel Farke to prepare for Premier League football
With Leeds now leading the Championship table, the Whites are in a great position to gain promotion back to the Premier League, and Farke may be preparing for that possibility.
Some fans have already expressed worries about the quality of some of the present players, who excel in the Championship but struggle in the division above, which could influence contract decisions.
If Byram and Firpo leave this summer, Farke may have little choice but to move Schmidt into the starting lineup, possibly before the 2024/25 season concludes, to give him the requisite experience.
