Leeds United will still aim for Premier League football next season, despite falling out of the automatic promotion places after their defeat to Coventry.
Daniel Farke’s side was soundly thrashed at the CBS Arena on Saturday (6 April), with Joel Piroe’s second-half score little more than a consolation as the Sky Blues won 2-1 to end the Whites’ promotion aspirations.
While there is still plenty of football to play between now and the conclusion of the season, most experts and journalists believe Farke’s side will be in the top flight next season, one way or another.
However, one of his teammates at Elland Road may not be able to make the step up, with reports indicating that Borussia Dortmund is interested in bringing Archie Gray to the Bundesliga during the summer transfer window [Alan Nixon, 7 April].
Will Archie Gray depart Leeds United during the summer transfer window?
The Bundesliga giants, along with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Liverpool, are keeping an eye on the teenager who has starred at Elland Road this season, and it appears that he may leave Leeds this summer.
While this will be a huge loss for the Whites, it may provide them with the impetus and financial resources to negotiate a contract to bring Kalvin Phillips back to Elland Road permanently.
Leeds United are apparently interested in re-signing the England international after a dismal spell at West Ham United, but they may struggle to afford his wages and the transfer sum that Manchester City is demanding for.
However, any sale of Gray would undoubtedly net the Whites more than a tidy sum, and considering his status as a homegrown player, it would represent a 100 percent profit. That fee might be reinvested in the signing of Phillips.
Other clubs are said to be interested in the former Elland Road star ahead of the conclusion of the season, so if the Whites want to sign him, they must start stepping up their efforts immediately to have any chance of winning the race.
