Liverpool could be in for a busy summer transfer season.
Michael Edwards might pull off the first transfer masterclass of his second Liverpool term by selling a forgotten star for a whopping amount. The Reds are reportedly looking for roughly £20 million for Sepp van den Berg, despite the Dutchman having only played four times for the club.
Van den Berg spent last season on loan at Mainz, Jurgen Klopp’s previous club, but the German team allegedly does not have the option to buy the defender this summer. The 22-year-old will instead return to Liverpool to decide his future.
Arne Slot intends to keep an eye on the former Preston loanee during preseason. According to The Athletic, Slot will not make a decision on whether to sanction a sale until he has assessed Van den Berg.
According to the report, if Liverpool sells the ex-PEC Zwolle prospect, they may expect to receive roughly £20 million. Brentford, Southampton, and Wolfsburg are reportedly interested in the player, who the Reds signed for £1.3 million in 2019.
Van den Berg has made just four senior appearances for Liverpool. None of those games have been in the Premier League.
His loan at Mainz proved particularly productive, as he appeared in all but one Bundesliga games for the Rhineland club. His versatility, allowing him to play both right-back and centre-back, helped Mainz finish comfortably 13th.
Liverpool are preparing for a hectic summer transfer window, with significant changes taking place both on and off the pitch. Edwards, the club’s former sporting director, has returned as Fenway Sports Group’s (FSG) football CEO.
