Liverpool targeted Martin Zubimendi during the summer transfer window.
Martin Zubimendi has reportedly encouraged Liverpool to renew their interest in him when the January transfer window opens.
The midfielder was the Reds’ primary target in the summer, as Arne Slot sought to expand his midfield options. Liverpool were prepared to meet Zubimendi’s £52 million release clause in his Real Sociedad contract, but he chose to stay with his hometown club.
Zubimendi was expected to sign a new contract in San Sebastian. However, Estadio Deportivo adds that the Spain star, who helped his team to Euro 2024 triumph, has ‘decided to renounce a hefty pay’.
According to reports, Liverpool will have to decide whether to make another approach for Zubimendi, who ‘intends to land in the Premier League this winter’ and regrets his summer decision.
Sociedad has had a rough start to the season, picking up only four points in their first six La Liga games. In the summer, they sold midfielder Mikel Merino to Arsenal and defender Robin Le Normand to Atletico Madrid.
