Leeds United head to Wembley Stadium on Sunday to face Southampton in the Championship play-off final, and Mark Viduka hopes his former club secures promotion.
Mark Viduka would be delighted to see Leeds United return to the Premier League. The former Whites striker will support his old side when they meet Southampton in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
Despite scoring a massive 90 points in the regular season, the Whites missed out on automatic promotion. Leicester City won the title, with Ipswich Town finishing second behind United.
However, a win at home this weekend will propel the Whites back to the top of English football. Speaking to offshorepokersites.com, Viduka hailed United’s performance following their 4-0 home win against Norwich City in the second leg of their play-off semi-final, which secured their first trip to Wembley since 2008.
He stated, “I saw the game, and I believe Leeds’ win over Norwich was one of their best performances in a long time. Four goals against Norwich, who are not a bad team, should give them confidence.
“In a one-off game, everything is possible. One of the most important laws in football is that if you don’t take your chances, your opponent will score at the opposite end.
“I don’t want to jinx anything, and I pray to God Leeds wins promotion, but I’m glad they’ve got a 4-0 win under their belts and are heading into the game with renewed confidence. I hope they win promotion this year since Leeds earned it throughout the season.”
United won only one of their last six regular-season games, and their play-off fate was set on the final day when Ipswich defeated Huddersfield Town and Daniel Farke’s team lost at home to Southampton. “I thought Leeds would win promotion automatically and not have to compete in the play-offs,” says Viduka, who scored 72 goals in 166 games during four years at Elland Road. “They were on fire; they hadn’t lost a game in around three months or so, and then the international break began.
“I believe Georginio Rutter returned from injury and was not playing as well as he had before. For me, he is a player who can go on the ball and make something out of nothing. He’s not a natural striker, but he is a natural number ten.
“Summerville’s performance also suffered after the international break, as he struggled to impact games as much as he had previously. But after going three months unbeaten, you can’t say anything negative about the team.
“After doing so well, they headed into a phase where they needed to win as many games as possible to ensure automatic promotion. But, for whatever reason, their form plummeted in those few games.”
