Keith Wyness, Everton’s former manager, believes Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has put other Premier League owners to shame during his tenure at the club.
Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, insisted there is “nothing much more you can ask” of the Greek billionaire’s ownership of the City Ground.
Nottingham Forest have spent heavily in the Premier League since returning to the top flight via the playoffs in 2022.
Marinakis has also played a key role in pushing through plans to expand the City Ground, with the BBC reporting (8 July) that Nottingham City Council has agreed in principle to sell the land to the club.
This new arrangement will allow Forest to increase capacity from 29,000 to 40,000 by rebuilding two stands.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side finished 17th in the table last season after being docked four points for violating the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Evangelos Marinakis put Nottingham Forest’s competitors to shame.
Despite the legal ramifications, Wyness believes Marinakis is a better alternative than the “private equity players” in the English top flight.
He told Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast: “I believe Marinakis is what many supporters enjoy.
“He’s demonstrated his passion and temperament, and we’ve seen him fly off the handle – but he’s an excellent owner.
“He’s a character and he’s got the resources. He looks after the club and does his best for it.
“There isn’t much more you can ask for; he’s completely committed to it.
“I believe there are many fans on his side because he wears his heart on his sleeve.
“It’s wonderful to see. He may be better than the private equity players that we see at many other Premier League clubs.
