SNP MSP James Dornan blasted Ally McCoist for comments he made live on TNT Sports during Rangers’ Europa League loss to Manchester United.
The Gers great described the travelling supporters as “amazing” when anti-Catholic shouts could be heard from the away end at Old Trafford.
During the game, TNT Sports announcer Darren Fletcher discussed the atmosphere from the away end during the live coverage.
“I’ll let you speak about them,” he said McCoist.
On co-commentary, the former Scotland striker said, “They’re amazing, that lot.”
Dornan took to X to protest the remarks, saying: “right heard everyone’s fave football commentator, Super Ally, applauding the Rangers fans right as they sing [expletive]. “This is only acceptable in Scotland.”
Ally McCoist condemned for Rangers fans’ insults against Manchester United.
The issue of sectarian chanting is one that football authorities should do more to address because it is a major issue throughout Scotland, not just at Rangers.
You have to give McCoist a break. He was working on the game for TV, absorbed in it, and there is a good likelihood he was unaware of the nature of the chants being yelled while he was working.
It is unfair to single out McCoist for criticism when he was working, and throwing the finger of blame at the Gers great only dilutes the subject at hand.
Rangers put on a terrific display at Old Trafford, losing 2-1 in heartbreaking fashion, but a few of off-the-field incidents have tarnished it a touch. However, criticizing McCoist seems rather severe.
