Kalvin Phillips is almost certain to depart Manchester City this summer as the club seeks to recuperate some of the money it invested to buy him.
Speaking on the current episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior journalist Pete O’Rourke reported that Manchester City will want to sell the midfielder on a permanent basis after a “nightmare” loan spell at West Ham.
The England international failed to impress after joining the Hammers briefly in the second half of the season, prompting the east London club to shelve any ambitions to recruit him this summer.
Football Insider reported earlier this month that the Citizens’ £40 million asking price had deterred some clubs from making a move to sign Phillips ahead of the transfer market reopening next month.
Phillips wants to leave, and City will not stand in his way if they can collect a “significant” fee for a player whose image has suffered greatly over the last two years.
The 28-year-old’s contract is slated to expire in 2028, after signing a six-year deal in 2022 when he joined from Leeds United for £45 million.
Kalvin Phillips could be set to depart Manchester City
Phillips has had a forgettable couple of years, failing to establish himself in Manchester City’s starting lineup before a dismal loan spell with West Ham.
Last month, Football Insider learned that Hammers coaches had chastised the midfielder for his poor attitude in training and behind the scenes.
Phillips has lost his spot in the England squad and will miss the European Championships this summer after failing to make Gareth Southgate’s training squad.
The Citizens are now looking to cash in on the Englishman to raise funds for prospective new additions.
Last month, Football Insider claimed that Philipps is anxious to return to Leeds United after his past success at Elland Road.
However, following the Whites’ defeat in the Championship play-off final against Southampton, that appears to be exceedingly improbable this summer.
