If Liverpool’s recent interest in an England star is any indication, the club may lose a key player. The Reds are prepared.
Liverpool could expect a number of departures in 2025. Of course, the most significant are contractual in nature.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mo Salah, and Virgil van Dijk will all depart the club on June 30th, as things stand. The club’s three most expensive contracts expire at the same time, and the club isn’t rushing to renew them.
However, they are not the only players involved with exits. Wataru Endo and Federico Chiesa are among those questioned. Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez have also been linked with other clubs, while Joe Gomez and Caoimhin Kelleher both considered leaving in 2024.
And that’s what we’re focusing on here because the two of them, along with Alexander-Arnold, pose an additional challenge for Liverpool. They’re all senior homegrown players, and the Reds must reach a quota for them.
Losing three players at once would leave a significant void in the squad, and it’s unclear who from the academy could come up to replace them. That explains Liverpool’s recent interest elsewhere.
Liverpool wants Morgan Gibbs-White.
Liverpool are now frequently connected with Morgan Gibbs-White. According to the Daily Mail, the Reds have a strong liking for him.
And that makes sense. Liverpool understands that their replacements for the native trio do not necessarily have to be in the same positions.
Gibbs-White might replace one of the quota players without changing the XI. Alexander-Arnold, for example, has Conor Bradley as his heir.
The Northern Irishman is also considered a homegrown player, thus ‘promoting’ him makes no difference. He’s already on the roster and counts toward the minimum.
Signing Gibbs-White or another English-developed player would give the Reds more options at right-back if they need to replace Alexander-Arnold. They could basically sign anyone, regardless of where they developed.
However, they would need to sign more documents someplace. If three depart, three homegrown talents must arrive.
Gibbs-White could be just the beginning.
