Liverpool came close to signing Anthony Gordon earlier this summer. Newcastle has now issued a new communication to the Reds regarding the prospect of renegotiating the move.
Liverpool has been advised it will not be able to renew its interest in Anthony Gordon this summer, as Newcastle is determined to keep the forward.
The Reds abandoned their quest to bring Gordon to Anfield earlier this summer. When Newcastle wanted Jarell Quansah to go in the opposite direction, talks on a prospective transfer fell through.
The meetings occurred as the Magpies attempted feverishly to gather funds before the Premier League’s PSR deadline, aware of the potential penalties if they violated the financial guidelines. They eventually crossed the line with the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson.
However, it was believed at the time that discussions with Liverpool may be reopened, particularly because Gordon had apparently been turned on by the interest from Anfield. Newcastle CEO Darren Eales, meanwhile, has stated that the club has no intentions to reconsider any prospective big-name departures.
“In the end, we had to do the deals that were right for the club (PSR wise), that made us compliant,” Eales told ChronicleLive. “So, from that standpoint, we did what we needed to do. But we kept what I would say are our core players, the type of players like [Alexander] Isak, Gordon, Bruno [Guimaraes], Joelinton – those players who are our core.
“Now it’s a case of OK, with that new cycle ahead of us now, how can we look to strengthen? How can we look to go to the next level?”
Asked whether Newcastle would begin the new season with Gordon, Isak and Guimaraes still at the club, Eales simply responded: “Yes!”
Gordon will return to Newcastle later this summer after being part of the England group that reached the Euro 2024 final. Gordon, on the other hand, had a somewhat dismal campaign, appearing only once from the bench in Germany.
“From a personal capacity it was a shame that he didn’t get more time because as we saw last season, Anthony can be a very dangerous player,” Eales told ESPN. “He was a key attacking danger in the Premier League last season.
“We also witnessed how Eddie [Howe] developed him, since when he came in midway through last season, even Anthony admits it took him some time to catch up.
“But we witnessed Eddie’s ability to develop players, which is one of Eddie’s biggest strengths and what makes him such a strong club manager because he has that day-to-day touch with the players on the pitch.
“That is a psychological, physical, and tactical perspective. So Anthony is one of many weapons we have, and that is the source of our excitement.
Liverpool.com says: A return for Gordon is doubtful this summer, but by participating in those negotiations earlier in the summer, Liverpool has at least sown the seed. The winger will now be aware that Liverpool is interested in him, and he appears to be open to the move.
That puts pressure on Newcastle this season; if they do not qualify for Europe, they may find themselves in a similar situation with their major stars next season, and those players may push harder for a move elsewhere.
