Following their sad 2-0 loss to Everton on Wednesday night, Liverpool appears unlikely to win any more Carabao Cup trophies this season.
The Reds were hoping to achieve what Arsenal did the day before: win a derby and re-enter the Premier League title race.
However, it turned out to be one of the most disappointing nights in recent Reds history. Not only did their title hopes fade, but it happened on their arch rivals’ turf.
The Reds conceded in the 28th minute following a series of defensive blunders, with Jarrad Branthwaite driving the ball across the line.
Then, around the hour mark, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was given a free header from a corner, and he sprang up to beat Alisson Becker.
Liverpool were unable to claw their way back into the game, and they must now rely on Arsenal and Manchester City to disintegrate in the coming weeks.
Few Liverpool players could be proud of themselves after the game, and Ibrahima Konate was perhaps one of his team’s poorest performers.
The 24-year-old was second best behind Calvert-Lewin throughout the night, both in the air and on the field.
Konate conceded multiple free kicks, which is poor on its own but especially worse against a team managed by Sean Dyche.
That’s not even taking into account his role in Everton’s opening goal, which resulted from a botched clearance effort.
According to Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher, Liverpool should consider bringing in a replacement for Konate.
What did Jamie Carragher say about Ibrahima Konate, the Liverpool defender?
Carragher stated, “Konate has been quite awful of late. Liverpool should buy a centre-back this summer.”
The Liverpool legend’s criticism followed his comments against the Frenchman throughout the game.
“Konate is here, so what is he doing? “He doesn’t know where he is,” Carragher explained. “Just sticks a leg out at it.”
It’s unfortunate that Klopp’s successful spell at Liverpool appears to be coming to an end. There’s a lot for the Reds and FSG to consider about this summer.
Konate is a fantastic player on his day, and perhaps this is simply a matter of him – and other Liverpool players – running on fumes after a hectic and stressful season.
