Liverpool makes a last-ditch bid to sign £25 million player before he joins Brighton

Liverpool are expected to boost up their transfer efforts after a quiet start to the summer on Merseyside.

So far, the Reds have done no business as they seek the best approach to improve Jurgen Klopp’s team.

With Arne Slot set to begin his first training sessions with the club later this week, the whole focus appears to be on finalizing preparations at the AXA Training Centre.

However, the transfer market never sleeps, and Liverpool might benefit from closing several deals this summer.

Up until now, the Reds had been methodical, but it appears that a fellow Premier League club has triggered their revival.

Several parts of the Liverpool squad appear to be in need of improvement during this year’s transfer window.

The first is at center back. However, since sources stated that Liverpool officials had downplayed an approach for Riccardo Calafiori, it is unclear whether Slot will sign a new defender.

Another position that has apparently been identified for improvement at Liverpool is in attack.

There have been links to a number of players, but nothing firm has yet emerged. Similar to Calafiori, denials have been more open. It now appears improbable that Crysencio Summerville will join, for example.

Finally, most Liverpool fans feel that the defensive midfield position needs to be strengthened. Wataru Endo performed admirably for the Reds last season, but he is not the long-term option.

As a result, bringing in a top No.6 would be well received by the fans.

According to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Liverpool is attempting to accomplish just that. They say the Reds are’making frantic attempts’ to sign Mats Wieffer from Feyenoord.

Liverpool’s efforts, however, will ‘come too late.’ According to reports, Feyenoord has already agreed to transfer Wieffer to Brighton for roughly £25 million plus ‘hefty bonuses’.

Dennis te Kloese, Feyenoord’s general manager, is reportedly staying in England to finalise the trade. Slot reportedly gave the go-ahead for Liverpool to hijack the deal, but the Reds are supposed to be ‘fishing behind the net.’

    Who is Mats Wieffer?

Wieffer has previously been said to be on the radar at Anfield. Graeme Bailey, a journalist, had identified the 24-year-old as one of four midfielders Liverpool could recruit this summer.

Wieffer, who has been with Feyenoord since 2022, has evolved into a great holding midfielder under Slot.

The former Excelsior player has nine caps for the Dutch national team after making his debut in 2023.

He was supposed to be part of Ronald Koeman’s Euro 2024 squad, but he got injured in the buildup to the tournament.

Overall, it appears that Liverpool arrived a little late for Wieffer. Nonetheless, the opportunity to rejoin the Reds and work with Slot could help turn things around.
