Liverpool is preparing a January move for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, with Napoli showing ‘interest’ in a swap deal

The Reds may soon be active in the January transfer window.

Liverpool could enhance their attacking options this month by signing one of Serie A’s leading stars. Manager Arne Slot has been circumspect about the possibility of new signings in January, despite his side’s current six-point lead at the top of the Premier League standings.

However, the Reds are now linked with Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has been a revelation at the club since signing from Dinamo Batumi back in 2022.

In his debut season, the Georgian international helped his team win its first top-flight title in 33 years, and he has since made 107 club appearances, scoring 30 goals.

However, his future in Italy is now in doubt, as Napoli officials have yet to offer him a new deal. Kvaratskhelia’s current contract expires in 2027, and the scenario appears to have piqued the interest of several European clubs.

According to the Athletic, Liverpool is monitoring the situation. Despite Slot’s assortment of attacking players, the likes of Harvey Elliott and Darwin Nunez appear out of favour, while Federico Chiesa has scarcely featured since his summer arrival from Juventus.

And Chiesa may hold the key to a move for Kvaratskhelia. Napoli are apparently interested in bringing the 27-year-old back to Serie A, paving the way for a possible exchange between the two teams.

Slot appears to have another negotiating tactic at his disposal. Kvaratskhelia’s international teammate, goalie Giorgi Mamardashvili, has already signed for Liverpool and will move to Anfield next summer after being loaned back to Valencia when the deal was made.

The forward’s flexibility makes him an appealing prospect for Liverpool. He has primarily been used on the left wing by Napoli, but he can also play on the right or in the center.

However, the Merseyside club will have competition to sign him. PSG and Chelsea are also reportedly interested, and Napoli are expected to demand a high sum given his age and long-term potential.

This week, Slot did disclose that the club were monitoring the players available to buy in January. However, he stated that he was satisfied with the existing depth of his squad and the quality of its players.

“This club has always looked at the market,” remarked the executive director. “We did this with the goalkeeper (Mamardashvili), who we don’t even have yet. If there is a market opportunity, this club will always try to capitalize on it. The team is in a good place.”
