Arne Slot would have been keeping an eye on one player in particular throughout England’s defeat to Spain as he hopes to bolster his squad ahead of the new season.
Liverpool is apparently “in talks” with a Euro 2024 finalist after some impressive performances in Germany this summer. The player will cost the Reds a lot of money, with his club reportedly asking for roughly $85 million (£65 million/€77 million) for his services.
Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace was not Gareth Southgate’s first-choice defender heading into this summer’s tournament, but an injury to Harry Maguire meant he was the next man up to partner Manchester City’s John Stones in the heart of England’s back four – and he did not disappoint.
In reality, the 24-year-old was one of the Three Lions’ top players as they advanced to their second straight Euros final, starting six of seven games and helping to keep two clean sheets. It came after Guehi had a successful domestic season, appearing 29 times as Palace finished in the top half of the Premier League table.
Liverpool are considering a move. According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Reds are major fans of the former Chelsea player, and talks with the Eagles are “on” despite his recent appearance for England. The Reds will also have to pay at least $85 million to sign him, with the Telegraph saying that the Eagles have set a high price for the star.
Guehi still has two years left on his contract, and the south London club is not in a hurry to sell, since the defender is one of their most valuable assets. However, they may be enticed to sell at the appropriate price.
Liverpool presently has Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, and Jarell Quansah as center back options, but Arne Slot may want to add more experience to his backline before his first season in command at Anfield. And Guehi could be the ideal candidate, with teammates and experts praising him for his efforts at Euro 2024.
Following England’s opening group stage victory over Serbia this month, teammate and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham praised him as “brilliant”. Following the final whistle, he stated: “He was brilliant. He picked the lines perfectly. He faced two particularly good centre-forwards at this level, (Dusan) Vlahovic and (Aleksandar) Mitrovic, who were quite difficult to deal with. It will be really beneficial for him to have (John) Stones by his side, who is one of the best in the business. “He was fantastic.”
With the England side due to return after Sunday’s sad defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, negotiations for Guehi are expected to heat up. Following Joel Matip’s departure at the end of last season, Liverpool are particularly eager to find a replacement, so it would be unsurprising if they went all out in pursuit of a deal.
