Liverpool has the funds available to sign Ederson from Atalanta this summer, should his club agrees to the trade.
According to Tutto Atalanta, Liverpool is prepared to pay £40 million if Atalanta decides to trade Ederson. The Brazilian had an excellent season in Bergamo after joining from Salernitana in 2022.
Atalanta does not want to sell, but they are realistic: their top players have historically left the club. This summer, they are also actively collecting bids for Teun Koopmeiners.
However, that could prove to be a stumbling hurdle. Koopmeiners’ availability suggests that they are willing to sell this summer, even after winning the Europa League, but losing Ederson would mean losing the core of their club.
And that is why Liverpool is waiting. They’ve been connected with Ederson for months, but the game is about waiting to see if Atalanta is willing to consider offers.
If they are, the Reds want to sign one of Europe’s greatest defensive midfielders from last season.
Liverpool wants Ederson.
Ederson’s success this season has earned him an international callup; he will represent Brazil at the Copa America 2024. He even won his first cap this month, in a friendly against Mexico.
All of this has both positive and negative implications for Liverpool. If Ederson plays well in the United States, competition for him may increase significantly, but there will be no rush to sign him.
The Reds may take their time with this one because Ederson is unlikely to move until after the competition.
The question of whether Liverpool should sign him is open to dispute. Despite Thiago’s departure, the club currently has a large number of midfielders. The only accessible room in the middle is for a defensive midfielder like Ederson, but the Reds must get this right.
Alan Varela of FC Porto is another intriguing option, and he has been repeatedly connected with Liverpool.
