Liverpool gets the go light for a £33.8 million transaction, but Richard Hughes must act soon

The latest Liverpool transfer news, as the Netherlands’ withdrawal from the Euro 2024 semi-final against England, could be good news for the Reds.

Liverpool’s chances of signing Bayer Leverkusen wideman Jeremie Frimpong this summer have improved following the Netherlands’ exit from Euro 2024.

The Reds have been linked with the 23-year-old this summer, but if they want to pay his reputed €40 million (£33.8 million) release clause, they will need to move quickly. According to reports, the clause is only active for a little more than one week.

Clubs interested in signing Frimpong may now have more time to finalize the transaction. The player was part of the Netherlands squad that faced England in the Euro 2024 semi-finals on Wednesday night.

He was an unused replacement as Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins scored late goals to help the Three Lions win 2-1. It means that the Dutch team will be returning home rather than preparing for Sunday’s final.

That, however, frees up Frimpong to plan his future if he decides to relocate this summer. If the Netherlands had progressed, his focus would have been on the final, delaying any transfer talks.

Liverpool, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Manchester City – where he spent some of his childhood career – are the five clubs rumored to have interested in Frimpong, with the player expressing a desire to join any of them. According to reports, the Reds were the most recent club to make contact about a move.

Frimpong was a member of the Bayer Leverkusen club that went unbeaten domestically last season, finishing ahead of Bayern Munich to win the Bundesliga title. The defeat to Atalanta in the Europa League final in May was the only thing that kept them from going the entire season unblemished.
