Liverpool fans believe they have limited it down to three potential midfielders after it was revealed that the club is close to signing a mystery player.
Liverpool are allegedly close to making their first signing of the summer transfer season.
Arne Slot’s side kick off their Premier League campaign on August 17 against newly promoted Ipswich Town at Portman Road, and fans have expressed anxiety over the lack of transfer activity.
So far this summer, the Reds have been connected with a number of potential targets, but nothing solid has materialized. However, this could alter in the following days.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool is ‘pursuing’ a specialist No.6 from outside the Premier League, which is something to keep an eye on this week. They also claim that the Reds rejected bids for Wataru Endo this summer because they didn’t want to lose a player in a position where they currently lack depth.
If Liverpool receives a fair bid for Endo, the Japanese international may leave Anfield to make way for a new defensive midfielder. The identity of the midfielder is unknown, but Reds fans on social media believe they’ve whittled it down to three potential targets. They believe the Reds are close to signing one of Porto’s Alan Varela, Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, or Atalanta’s Ederson.
“I want either Zubimendi, Ederson or Varela but I have a feeling I’m going to be left dissapointed,” an X supporter commented. Another added: “Don’t be surprised if we choose Alan Varela. Obviously, Zubimendi is the dream.”
A different person said: “Zubimendi’s got the hype, but Varela could bring some fresh energy to the squad.” A fourth person responded: “Martin Zubimendi seems to be everyone’s first choice, but I’d be more than happy if Alan Varela became a Liverpool player this summer.”
And a sixth added: “Ederson was excellent in Europa League, stop using cup competitions to judge a player watch them too in their league.”
Liverpool.com says: It will be intriguing to see whether any of these three players are the mystery defensive midfielder Liverpool is hoping to sign before the Premier League season begins. While Ederson and Varela could be choices, it appears doubtful that Martin Zubimendi will be sold, given that Real Sociedad is expected to lose Mikel Merino this summer due to a one-year contract.
Zubimendi played an important role in Spain’s victory this summer, replacing Rodri at halftime against England in the Euro 2024 final, and would be an impressive purchase if he is the mystery guy Liverpool is looking for.
