Liverpool held talks with Newcastle over Anthony Gordon in June but were unsuccessful, and the Magpies have now apparently opted to move further despite transfer interest.
Newcastle United are reportedly contemplating contract discussions with Anthony Gordon when he returns for pre-season in order to stave off transfer interest from Liverpool. In June, the Reds and Magpies failed to agree on a trade for Gordon.
Liverpool had approached Newcastle about signing the attacker for a reduced sum ahead of this year’s Profit & Sustainability Rules deadline, since the club was approaching its spending limit. However, it is reported that the north-east club was underwhelmed by Liverpool’s alleged lukewarm interest and walked away, despite Gordon’s apparent desire to transfer to Anfield.
There have been concerns that his focus has shifted away from St James’ Park, but it appears doubtful that Liverpool will re-approach the winger. However, Newcastle’s board appears to want to eliminate any risk by discussing a lucrative renewal following a great year that resulted in England’s selection for Euro 2024.
Gordon has taken a break since the tournament’s completion and is yet to begin preseason. The Athletic reports that one of the goals of contract negotiations is to eliminate any interest from Liverpool and other affiliated clubs.
Eddie Howe is eager to keep the 23-year-old, describing him as a “integral” part of his plans for Newcastle. He reiterated that he is certain the winger will remain “dedicated” to the project at St James’ Park, adding last week: “We have had no acrimonious or negative conversations this summer. He has always been the Anthony Gordon who has given his all to Newcastle, and I want to make that plain to all of our fans.
With four weeks till the Liverpool transfer deadline, Arne Slot has failed to make his first signing. A number of players have been connected with departures, though Newcastle’s interest in Jarell Quansah during the Gordon negotiations was quashed.
However, it has recently emerged that Liverpool agreed to a £45 million package for Joe Gomez as part of the Gordon deal. As a result, the centre-back’s future at Anfield is in doubt.
Liverpool, meanwhile, believes it has enough options on the left wing, with Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, and Luis Diaz all capable of playing the position. Diaz had been linked with Barcelona, but speculation has cooled down since the Spanish club signed Nico Williams.
