It was known that Liverpool had no interest in Newcastle United’s Yankuba Minteh.
That’s despite the former Feyenoord loanee spending an impressive half-season on loan with new Reds manager Arne Slot in 2023/24.
Ian Doyle addressed the Echo about the club’s situation earlier this June, but it appears that things have improved if one source is to be believed.
Minteh had 16 goal contributions in 27 Eredivisie games last season.
Pete O’Rourke says Newcastle ‘rebuffed’ Liverpool’s initial approach.
According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Liverpool continues to be interested in the Gambian because to his contacts with Arne Slot.
The Merseysiders will need to be relentless on this front.
With the Magpies needing to balance the books to meet PSR criteria, it’s a potentially easy £40 million (Echo) for Eddie Howe’s men, while also checking off a crucial box for Richard Hughes and his recruitment team.
Arne Slot is a fan of Minteh
With figures like that at 19 years old, it’s easy to see why Liverpool might be interested in the attacker.
He’s a left-footed, right-sided winger (who can also play on the other flank) – consider another box checked!
Oh, and Slot is said to be a great supporter of his former Feyenoord protege, telling reporters in words provided by The Fatu Network: “He clearly has self-confidence. His eagerness to give anything is amazing. When we look at his numbers, it’s extremely outstanding. Minteh sprinted more sprint meters versus Ajax in an hour than most other players in the two games. He is quite fast. And he wants it so much.”
If we believe Mo Salah will extend his current contract at Anfield and stay for at least another season (perhaps two or three), this is an attractive solution for the club to consider.
Minteh will undoubtedly realize he will be the understudy in a drama of the Egyptian King’s caliber.
After a season or two (or more) of learning the ropes, we’ll have a potentially exciting first-choice forward filing out on Slot’s right side!
It’s an option to consider.
Liverpool mustn’t let Everton assist Newcastle expose the PSR loophole.
The Blues could step in before Richard Hughes and company have their say.
A recent trend of financial fiddling has seen several Premier League clubs circumvent PSR laws by effectively trading players.
Newcastle are apparently interested in signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin, while Everton are reportedly interested in Minteh, in what is undoubtedly the latest example of Premier League clubs exploiting PSR’s major flaw (BBC).
If there is a possibility to fill a void for the Toon Army, Liverpool should seize it.
