The defender has had a difficult year, but he is relieved to have secured a year-long temporary exit from Liverpool.

Liverpool has revealed that defender Calvin Ramsay has joined League One team Wigan Athletic on loan for the entire 2024/25 season.

The right-back had a tough season, making only six appearances. Following knee surgery earlier last year, he was limited to two games at his initial loan club Preston North End.

He then struggled to find favour with new loan club Bolton Wanderers in the second half of the season, appearing only three times for the League One side. Ramsay only appeared in eight matchday squads for Bolton and did not play again after February 17.

The 20-year-old Scotland international is “over the moon” to have secured a loan deal with Wigan and expects to restart his career following a difficult year. He explained: “It occurred swiftly, and I met the manager (Shaun Maloney) two weeks ago.

“I had a great talk, and there was an immediate connection. I am eager to get started and show everyone what I can achieve. It’s a terrific opportunity at a good club, and I’m excited to go.”

Ramsay, who signed from Aberdeen for £6.5 million in 2022, is the first player to leave Arne Slot’s team since the new manager took over on Saturday.

Ramsey has appeared twice for Liverpool’s senior team, making his Champions League debut in a 2-0 home win over Napoli on November 1, 2022.

He played the entire 90 minutes in a League Cup third-round victory over Derby County eight days later, but has not appeared since. He was included in Jurgen Klopp’s matchday squad six times before suffering a long-term knee injury around the end of February 2023.

Meanwhile, Liverpool has confirmed that Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip will leave when their contracts expire this month, while Adrian, the club’s third-choice goalkeeper, has been granted a contract extension.
