Steven Gerrard graced the Anfield turf with distinction for 17 years as a Liverpool player, and he’ll do so once again later this month.
The former Reds captain has been out of work since departing Al-Ettifaq at the end of January, and it remains to be seen where the 44-year-old’s next managerial role will take him.
In the meantime, he’ll be dusting off his boots in preparation for a return to the venue where he shot to international stardom and acclaim.
Gerrard confirmed for Liverpool Legends match
Liverpool FC revealed on their official website on Tuesday morning that Gerrard will take part in the LFC Foundation’s annual legends charity match, which this year sees a Chelsea team visit Anfield on 22 March.
The Huyton native will pair up with a number of former colleagues, including Sami Hyypia, Martin Skrtel, Peter Crouch, and Dirk Kuyt, for the highly anticipated match.
The proceeds from the match will benefit the LFC Foundation’s health programs, which serve to battle health disparities throughout the city by delivering physical and mental wellness programs for individuals of all ages.
Gerrard has a lot of history against Chelsea!
Gerrard has been a regular in the annual LFC Legends match, having played against Ajax last year and Celtic in 2023, as well as Barcelona and Bayern Munich a few years ago, and it’s great to see him back for such a charitable cause.
Given his history against Chelsea during his glittering playing career, our former captain will undoubtedly be motivated to play against them this month.
Although he helped the Reds win two legendary Champions League semi-finals against the west London club, memories of his own goal in the 2005 League Cup final and the infamous slip during the painful title race run-in nine years later are far less pleasant.
Gerrard also came dangerously close to joining Chelsea just a few weeks after Liverpool won their sixth European Cup 20 years ago, but he found the pride of representing his hometown club too strong to give up.
That choice, combined with his heroics on the pitch for Liverpool, insured that his legend status at Anfield would never fade, and he’ll be greeted with a rousing reception when he returns on March 22.
