Lille have reportedly rejected a pitiful offer for Newcastle United target Jonathan David.
With 90 goals in his last three and a half seasons, the Canadian has piqued Premier League interest. His perilous contract position, which expires this summer, has put potential suitors on high alert.
Earlier this month, NewcastleWorld claimed that the Magpies have “growing confidence” that a summer deal will be completed. Movement in January is unlikely because PSR continues to control policy at St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe admitted last week that Newcastle were close to signing Abdukodir Khusanov before he joined Manchester City. Toon chiefs are likely to keep their powder dry until the summer – a scenario that favours David.
The striker, who has 19 goals in all competitions this season alone, is not in a hurry to commit his future to Lille. Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool have also been connected with the 25-year-old.
An unknown team is believed to have offered roughly £10 million for David earlier this week. Unsurprisingly, the offer was declined, with the Ligue 1 club still performing well domestically and in Europe.
David scored in Lille’s 6-1 Champions League victory over Feyenoord last night, while former Toon flop Remy Cabella also scored. The 25-year-old has previously issued a come-and-get-me call to Premier League clubs, which gives Newcastle even more confidence.
“What am I waiting for?” he asked last year. “I suppose now it’s easier to say. I’m in the final year of my contract. My contract will eventually come to an end. So, we’ll see. Let’s see what happens next year. I am open to everything.
“I believe the Premier League is widely acknowledged as one of the top leagues in the world. And for me, it’s not the Premier League or nothing. I’m open to everything, and each league presents unique challenges.”
